Magnitude Surveys is one of the largest providers of archaeological geophysical surveys in the UK. We design and build bespoke geophysical equipment and software to continually push the boundaries of non-intrusive archaeological investigations. We are currently working on a wide range of projects from major national infrastructure to small housing schemes across the UK.

The Position

Magnitude Surveys is seeking to promptly recruit a geophysical technician (permanent position) to help assist in developing and rolling out the company’s new systems and software. The position will entail a mix of office-based and field-based responsibilities. These include:

  • Equipment development and maintenance.
  • Software development and maintenance.
  • Troubleshooting.
  • Workshop administration
  • Field survey.
  • Data analysis, interpretation and report writing.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Creative thinker who is interested in developing new equipment to collect geophysical datasets (in particular magnetic, electromagnetic and GPR datasets).
  • Experience of maintaining geophysical equipment.
  • Self motivated and able to self prioritise tasks based on need.
  • Degree in Archaeological Prospection or Geophysics and/or a solid understanding of the physics behind geophysical techniques and their application to new surface investigations.

The Position

Magnitude Surveys is seeking to recruit a geophysical researcher to assist in developing and streamlining the company’s bespoke systems and software. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Research and Development and work as part of a small research team. The position will be primarily office based with occasional field work. You will join a team of 30 archaeological geophysics professionals, all of whom bring a unique set of skills to a highly collaborative, friendly work environment.  General tasks will include:

 

  • Equipment development and maintenance
  • Data processing software development
  • Image processing workflow development
  • Machine based learning development

 

Research topics we are actively exploring at the moment include:

  • Auto feature extraction
  • Full extraction and utilisation of three-axis magnetometer components
  • GNSS positioned Multi-Channel GPR data processing
  • Improved data processing and data positioning algorithms through the incorporation of multi sensor data.

 

Upon familiarity with the company’s systems, software, and research objectives, the successful candidate will be able to suggest areas of investigation.

 

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Degree in Archaeological Prospection or Geophysics and/or a solid understanding of the physics behind geophysical techniques and their application to new surface investigations.
  • Creative thinker who is interested in developing new methods to process and interpret geophysical datasets (in particular magnetic and electromagnetic induction datasets).
  • Experience of Python or similar programming languages is necessary.
  • Experience of Unix command line environment.

Magnitude Surveys is seeking a driven, self-motivated individual who is looking to expand their technical skills and creative abilities in an expanding company. The position will entail mostly field-based responsibilities with a mix of office-based training. These could include:

  • Field survey.
  • Community survey.
  • Training in data analysis and interpretation.

The ideal candidate would possess the following:

  • Full clean driving licence including experience driving off road
  • The ability to work as part of a close-knit team
  • Degree in archaeological near surface geophysics or similar

Although the above qualifications are preferred, we encourage anyone with a keen interest in archaeological geophysics to apply. Full training will be given to the right candidate.

We specialise in tailoring geophysical surveys to meet both the project’s specific geophysical requirements and the needs of community participants. To meet these requirements, we design and manufacture our own cutting-edge geophysical systems and software. Programming experience is not essential, but the ideal candidate will be eager to learn and develop their technical skills.

The ideal candidate would have an MSc in archaeological prospection or similar qualifications. As the position requires survey work away from site, a full, clean driving licence is therefore essential. The office-based responsibilities will be based in our head office, conveniently situated between Bradford and Leeds with good links to the motorway and public transportation network.
