Job Information

The Equipment and Fleet Officer will play a key role in ensuring the logistics needs of the company are met through the maintenance, development and procurement of equipment & fleet. A key aspect of this role will be the management of projects, and the supervisors and assistants working on projects or tasks, under the remit above. This role will entail limited unsociable hours to fit equipment & fleet maintenance around use during office hours, or to help the wider Company meet key targets or goals.

Main Activities 

  • Responsible for coordinating equipment & fleet availability across the company. This includes ensuring the optimum availability of resources to support income generating activities (e.g. survey work), through the efficient management of equipment and fleet.
  • Manage the repair and maintenance of equipment/fleet under budgetary targets and timescales set by the Tech Ops Manager.
  • Ensure that all equipment and fleet adhere to health and safety standards. Undertake regular consultations with equipment and fleet users on health and safety issues, as part of established monitoring processes.
  • Supervise and conduct training on equipment and troubleshooting under instruction or goals set by managers.
  • Support Tech Ops and Projects staff on troubleshooting, as and when required.
  • Manage the stock of equipment and parts, including maintaining relationships with suppliers and negotiating arrangements.
  • Safely manage the work of assistants and supervisors on fleet and equipment projects or tasks, ensuring their work is undertaken to set timescales and budgets.
  • Assess the impact of equipment and fleet availability against ongoing projects, to ensure sufficient support for wider company goals and the delivery of income generating activities.
  • Responsible for archiving data, following any specific requirements where necessary.
  • Provide input into the direction of new equipment & fleet strategies.
  • Limited fieldwork on an ad-hoc basis, particularly where this may be required for training purposes.

Person Specification and Skill Requirements 

  • Relevant degree or other qualification
  • Critical analysis skills, including problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Effective manager of people. Able to support their team by setting achievable milestones and balancing their workloads. Can make targets and plans for multiple teams working on related tasks.
  • Effective at time and task management, can plan short, medium and long-term tasks or activities based on a clear understanding of what could be done and departmental goals or targets.
  • Can see the bigger picture and is capable of deconstructing complex situations and simplifying them for others for training and/or support purposes.
  • Experience of managing activities within a set budget. Understands the components of a budget and can adapt budgets based on changing variables.
  • Has a well-developed understanding of common prospection techniques, geophysical equipment and geophysical data for heritage and/or non-heritage applications.
  • Good understanding of written scientific English
  • Proficient in GIS, Microsoft Office & Windows environments
  • Experience in mentoring
  • Ability to manage a range of competing demands
