Job Information

The IT and Electronics Officer will play a key role in ensuring the technical needs of the company are met through maintenance, development, and procurement of systems & software. IT Comprises electronics, computing hardware & software. A key aspect of this role is the management of supervisors & assistants working on projects or tasks within the remit above. This role will entail limited working during unsociable hours to fit maintenance around use of systems during office hours, or to help the Company meets key targets or goals.

Main Activities 

  • Manage & conduct internal electronics development, ensuring electronics conform to company needs and meet health and safety standards.
  • Manage & conduct Company software maintenance and development
  • Manage & conduct IT maintenance and development.
  • Supervise and conduct training on IT under instruction or goals set by managers.
  • General IT support for staff.
  • Input into the direction of new IT strategies
  • Responsible for delivering technical projects within budget and agreed timescales, set by managers. This includes providing updates and summary reports for managers.
  • Manage assistants & supervisors working on IT & electronics projects or tasks, ensuring their work is undertaken to a safe and high-quality standard.
  • Assess the impact of IT/Electronics resource availability, and ongoing projects, to provide support for wider company goals and the delivery of fee-generating Projects
  • Responsible for data archiving systems, following any specific requirements where necessary
  • Ad-hoc general workshop / office tasks as may be required.
  • Limited fieldwork on an ad-hoc basis, particularly where this may be required for training purposes

Person Specification and Skill Requirements

  • Degree in science computing or similar qualifications
  • Critical analysis skills, including problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Effective manager of people. Able to support their team by setting achievable milestones and balancing their workloads. Can make targets and plans for multiple teams working on related tasks.
  • Effective at time and task management, can plan short, medium and long-term tasks or activities based on a clear understanding of what could be done and departmental goals or targets.
  • Can see the bigger picture and is capable of deconstructing complex situations and simplifying them for others for training and/or support purposes.
  • Experience of managing activities within a set budget. Understands the components of a budget and can adapt budgets based on changing variables.
  • Confident and outgoing. Is able to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of written scientific English
  • Proficient in GIS, Microsoft Office & Windows environments
  • Experience in mentoring
  • Understanding of physics behind geophysical techniques
  • Proficient in Python or similar programming languages
  • Experience of Unix command line enviornment
  • Experience of Backend software
